Summer Internship (Petoskey) 

GRP Engineering, Inc. is seeking a qualified applicant to fill an opening for a summer engineering intern in their Petoskey, Michigan office.  Responsibilities will include assistance with power utility substation, transmission and distribution system project design, drawing preparation, and construction staking.  Applicants should be in the BSEE program but not required and preference will be given to applicants from the Northern Michigan area.

GRP Engineering, Inc., a customer focused and locally owned power utility and electrical engineering consulting firm, is currently accepting applications for an Engineering Technician in their Grand Rapids, Michigan office.

Position Summary

This position performs a variety of technical engineering-related office and field tasks involved in planning, design, and construction of power utility systems.  The individual in the position will operate AutoCAD, ESRI based software, Microsoft Office Suite, and GRP’s proprietary staking software, and similar programs as necessary.


  • Produces construction drawings, maps, diagrams, and reports as needed using AutoCAD, ESRI, & MS Office software.
  • Construction staking of power utility transmission and distribution line projects.
  • Field inspection of power utility construction projects.
  • Performs field mapping services utilizing GPS devices on overhead & underground lines and equipment.
  • Performs field inventory of joint-use attachments to utility poles.
  • Preparation of construction drawings for substation, transmission and distribution line projects.
  • Assistance with permitting for power utility construction projects.


  • High school diploma required.  Two-year Associates Degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Construction Technology, Geography, GIS or related discipline or equivalent experience in a similar position is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Familiarity with utility infrastructure and mapping systems including ESRI based products.
  • Must be able to understand mapping terminology, survey, and GIS concepts.
  • Must be able to operate, maintain, and protect expensive survey equipment including GPS units, laser range finders, and electronic transits.
  • Must be self-motivated, highly detail oriented, and have strong interpersonal skills.
  • Must possess a Michigan Driver’s License.
  • Pre-employment drug screen required.


  • Duties are performed inside an office and outside in difficult terrain.
  • Overtime hours may be required.
  • Travel within the State of Michigan is required including occasional overnight stays.
