GRP Engineering, Inc., a customer focused and locally owned power utility and electrical engineering consulting firm, is currently accepting applications for a GIS Technician in their Grand Rapids, Michigan office.

Position Summary

This position performs a variety of technical engineering-related office and field engineering tasks involved in planning, design, and construction of power utility systems primarily through the use of Geographic Information System (GIS) software, databases, and interfaces with other applications.  The individual in the position will operate ESRI based software, AutoCAD, and GRP’s proprietary staking software, and similar programs as necessary.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Operates ESRI based GIS systems, software and interfaces with other systems (Milsoft, NISC, GPS Systems, and GRP’s proprietary staking software.)
  • Produces maps, diagrams, drawings, and reports as needed using the GIS, ESRI, AutoCAD software.
  • Supports and maintains utility GIS databases by ensuring the layers, attributes, spatial relationships, and connectivity are accurate and reflective of the electric systems.
  • Produces construction project drawings through GIS reflecting accurate and current geographical and land base information including but not limited to highways, roads, lakes, rivers, creeks, wetlands, city and township limits, property lines, and easements.
  • Performs field mapping services utilizing GPS devices on overhead & underground lines and equipment.
  • Maintains current knowledge through attending conferences and training within the GIS, mapping and land/surveying areas to improve overall effectiveness.
  • Construction staking of power utility transmission and distribution line projects.
  • Preparation of construction drawings for substation, transmission and distribution line projects.
  • Assistance with permitting for power utility construction projects.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  • Two-year Associates Degree in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Geography or Cartography including coursework in ArcMap on cartography, querying, editing, and displaying data.
  • Experience using ESRI-based software and GIS related equipment for field mapping.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Familiarity with utility infrastructure and mapping systems.
  • Must be self-motivated, highly detail oriented, and have strong interpersonal skills.
  • Must possess a Michigan Driver’s License.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Duties are performed inside an office and outside in difficult terrain.
  • Overtime hours may be required.
  • Travel within the State of Michigan is required including occasional overnight stays.
